Does Prolactin Indicate Severity of Psoriasis?
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Psoriasis vulgaris is a common chronic and inflammatory disease of skin that its etiology is not completely known. However, it seems that genetic and environmental factors play a role in this disease. In vitro studies show that prolactin as a neurohormone has an etiologic effect on psoriasis. This study aimed to compare serum prolactin levels in psoriatic patients with control group. Method: Prolactin level in serum was measured with ELISA method in 30 patients with psoriasis vulgaris and in 30 healthy persons as control group, which they had been matched with a view to age and sex. Result: Mean serum prolactin level in psoriatic patients was not significantly higher than control group. However, there was statistically significant relation between severity of disease and serum prolactin levels (r= 0.521, p=0.003). Conclusion: Positive relation between severity of psoriasis vulgaris and serum prolactin levels may suggest that prolactin is an index that shows severity of disease.

Serum prolactin level in psoriasis
The recent report, “Serum prolactin level in psoriasis”, is very interesting 1. Ghiasi et al. concluded that “it seems that while intracutaneous prolactin may contribute to the pathogenesis of psoriasis, the probable role of pituitary-produced circulating prolactin in the disease process needs further investigation .” There are some concerns on this report. First, although Ghiasi et al. have st...
full textDoes non-specific bronchial responsiveness indicate the severity of asthma?
It is difficult to analyse the relationship between bronchial responsiveness and the severity of asthma since each alone is difficult to assess. Asthma is a heterogeneous condition with many patterns of expression, and clinical methods used to assess its severity have their limitations. Problems also arise in interpreting the results of bronchial provocation tests and methodological differences...
full textAssociation of Psoriasis Severity with Serum Prolactin, Thyroid Hormones, and Cortisol before and after Treatment
BACKGROUND Prolactin (PRL) level is proposed to be associated with the severity of psoriasis although the previous studies reported different results. OBJECTIVE To find the association between PRL levels and severity of psoriasis before and after treatment. In addition, we aimed to find a difference in prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), and cortisol le...
full textDoes serum prolactin indicate the presence of seizure in the emergency department patient?
STUDY OBJECTIVE We sought to evaluate whether there was a correlation between elevated serum prolactin in patients presenting with the question of seizure. METHODS A Convenience sample of 200 consecutive patients were chosen who had a serum prolactin measurement in the setting of seizure activity. RESULTS The prolactin level was within a range of 3.90-294.00 mg/dl with an upper limit of nor...
full textSerum Prolactin Levels in Psoriasis Vulgaris
Background. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 1-3% of Caucasians. Prolactin has proliferative effects on human keratinocytes, a dominant feature of psoriasis, and it is thought that this hormone may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. This study was conducted to confirm or refute these findings in order to better understand the disease pathogen...
